Captain’s Glory

by Taylor Campbell

How much Cap’n Crunch
do I have to swallow
before you realize I’m trying to kill myself?
My mouth is in pieces here.
How did I do this as a boy?
Sitting in my Dorsey Levens jersey
I begged my mom to buy.
It had numbers on the sleeves,
like the real thing.
Sitting, shoveling bowl
after box of the old sailor’s squares
into my nine year old hole.
Now just one bite and it’s like
chewing teeth.
My tongue like a half-popped firecracker,
the tendrils separating and
sliding down my throat.
