National Coming Out Week

Fall 2006 marked the first year National Coming Out Week was celebrated campus-wide. The week was filled with many activities, including a non-denominational chapel service, a panel discussion on Virginia’s marriage amendment, several film documentaries, and a campus wide SpeakOUT.

The SpeakOUT was held in honor of National Coming Out Day, the life of Harvey Milk, the marches on Washington for equality, and to celebrate the history of sexual minority culture in America. But most importantly, it celebrated the personal lives of those living, working, and studying in our Mary Baldwin community.

Harvey Bernard Milk (May 22, 1930November 27, 1978), an American politician and gay rights activist, was the first openly gay city supervisor of San Francisco, California.  He was largely responsible for helping motivate the grassroots efforts for sexual minorities. The Harvey Milk School in New York – The Hetrick-Martin Institute is in the forefront of support and educational efforts for young sexual minorities. He was assassinated in 1978.
