Important Introductory MBC Acronyms

ACADEMIC

Peer Advisor
An upper-class student who attends all MBC 101 classes, provides individual consultation, and helps staff mentors make sure that first-year students are aware of resources at MBC.

Peer Mentor
An upper-class student trained by the Director of the Learning Skills Center to help other students manage time, learn effective study skills, and adjust to academic life at college.

ELECTED LEADERSHIP

Class Officer
A group of four students elected by their class. Their duties are to program towards the needs of their class, including special event planning for Freshman Follies, Apple Day, Junior Dads and Family Weekend, and Commencement.

Community Development Team (CDT)
A group of five students who convene each week to discuss issues pertinent to their community and work to collaboratively solve problems and program to meet the needs of the community. The members include the Resident Assistant, Hall President, Judicial Board representative, Honor Council representative and Senator.

Executive Committee (EC)
A group of eight students elected by the student body. Their duties as a committee are to make suggestions on policy-making and coordination of the branches of the Student Government Association, to make appointments and approvals of student positions, and to act on Senate legislation.

Honor Council (HC)
A group of 13 students elected by the student body to educate and enforce MBC’s honor code. The duties of the Honor Council are to hear cases involving lying, cheating, stealing, plagiarism, and failure to report an offense, and to impose penalties as warranted by the individual cases. They must also hear cases referred by the Judicial Board concerning infractions of the Honor System, and to impose penalties as warranted by the individual cases.

Inter-Club Council (ICC)
One elected officer and one financial representative from each club and organization on campus combine to form ICC, led by the SGA treasurer. They coordinate efforts and work cooperatively with the college administration in planning and scheduling programs, as well as approving dissemination of monies to recognized clubs and organizations.

Judicial Board (JB)
A group of 13 students elected by the student body to educate and enforce MBC’s judicial code. The duties of the Judicial Board are to hear cases involving social conduct infractions and to impose penalties as warranted by the individual cases. Cases are referred to the Honor Council when incidents of lying, cheating, or stealing are discovered during the investigative process.

Residence Hall President (HP)
A student elected by her floor or building community to address concerns of the residents including work orders and other hall issues. Additionally the HP attends weekly Senate meetings and writes a monthly newsletter.

Senator
A student elected by her floor or building community to represent the hall at Senate each week and vote on campus issues.

Student Advocates
A group of eight students elected by the student body to advise and provide support for students accused of an Honor or Judicial violation.

MENTORING

Big Sista
An upper-class student of color who serves as a mentor to first-year African-American and Latina students.

Big Sister
An upper-class student who serves as a mentor to a first-year student and assists with the adjustment to college.

Orientation Leader (OL)
An upper-class student who welcomes first-year students into the campus community, helps them adjust to their new home, and encourages positive relationships.

Program for the Exceptionally Gifted (PEG) Orientation Leader
- An upper-class student who is a member of PEG and serves as a mentor to first-year PEG students.

Survival Opportunities and Resources (S.O.A.R.) Orientation Leader
An upper-class student of color who serves as a mentor to first-year African-American and Latina students.   

PROGRAMMING

Assistant Community Coordinator (ACC)
A group of three students selected to provide support and guidance to the RA staff and residential community on campus.

Baldwin Programming Board (BPB)
A group of six students selected to provide various large-scale activities and events to the undergraduate population.

Peer Educator
An upper-class student hired to fulfill specific tasks and assist with developing programs of the Office of Student Life.

Residence Hall Association (RHA)
A group of students, including four elected officers, selected to provide programs and events for the residence hall population on campus. Hall Presidents also fall under the umbrella of RHA.

Resident Assistant (RA)
An upper-class student who lives in the residence hall and helps with the adjustment to life at MBC. An RA is the primary resource person on the floor who serves as a mentor/peer counselor while developing a sense of community on the floor and addressing any concerns that may arise. RAs can also serve as a guide to refer you to additional resources on campus.  

Umoja House Resident
A group of five selected students who are committed to creating and facilitating residential and campus-wide events that celebrate and explore African-American history and culture.

VWIL (Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership)

Cadet
A student returning to VWIL.

Cadre
An upper-class VWIL student in charge of physical training PT (Physical Training) and LCP (Leadership Challenge Program).

Calic
A senior VWIL student that works directly with a first-year VWIL student, serves as a resource, and helps with the adjustment to VWIL.

Ma’am
A student involved in VWIL who has received her “Rights of Passage.”

nULL
A first-year VWIL student; the term nULL means “zero and void” and suggests that the new student is unfamiliar with the ways of the corps and the values it represents.

Sister nULL
A cadet or nULL who matriculated into VWIL during the same academic year.
