Lynda Alanko

Lynda Alanko joined the Department of Athletics and Wellness during the 2007-08 academic year. Since that time she has taught both tennis and fitness classes. Along with teaching, her other duties include: Head Tennis Coach, Assistant Sports Information Director, Senior Woman Administrator, and assistant coach in basketball and cross country.
Prior to joining the team at Mary Baldwin, she worked as a Personal Fitness Trainer in Duluth, GA. There she taught classes in weight training, developed individual fitness plans, and administered exercise testing. She also served as the Athletic Director of Stuart Hall School in Staunton, VA. There she was an administrator, teacher, and coach. She also served as president of the Blue Ridge Athletic Conference from 1993-1995.
Alanko received her BS in Exercise Science from The University of Florida. In addition, she is a 2009 NACWAA/HERS Institute for Administrative Advancement graduate and a certified tennis instructor with the Professional Tennis Registry.
Valerie Gangwer

Fencing Instructor Valerie Gangwer is a native of the Shenandoah valley. She grew up in Dayton, Virginia and got interested in fencing in college, where she took it as her Phsycial Education requirement. Some 20 years later Valerie joined the Mary Baldwin staff in Audiovisual Services (now Media Services) and began to fence with the club. After several years helping previous coaches, she went to a certification course through the USFA, and is now running the program.
