Department of

Economics Graduates

“In the midst of the spectrum of economic forces ranging from the macro to the micro, what was most important about my experience in the economics department at Mary Baldwin College was the one-on-one personal relationships with the professors there.  I would not be where I am today without the personal involvement of Jane Pietrowski and many others.  As a Presbyterian pastor, my knowledge of the administrative side of the church has been helped by the learning I enjoyed at MBC.”

Lisa (Nichols) Hickman ‘93
Lisa is currently serving as an Associate Pastor at New Wilmington Presbyterian Church in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. Last year her book, The Worshiping Life was published by Westminster/John Knox Press.  Her husband Jason is a pastor and a poet.  They have two daughters, Caitlyn and Leah.

“Being an Econ major has impacted my life in every way.  At work it has helped me to be a successful manager in two vastly different industries by helping me to apply basic principles to streamline operations and make smart decisions about how to effectively cut costs and economize.  I apply the basic principles of economics in all of my decision making — even when I don't realize it.  At home, with a newborn, my husband and I balance our very hectic lives the only way I know how — by utilizing cost/benefit analysis, though I don't always call it that!  My time learning from Dr. P and Dr. Klein was such a bright spot in my life.  They are inspirations and incredible role models.”

Liz Morgan ‘91
In addition to being a new mom, (a 7-month-old son — Sean Michael) Liz is a center manager for  FedExKinkos in Nashville, TN.  She has 17 team members and her responsibilities include the management of payroll, supply and machine costs, team members and customers.  She is responsible for all personnel decisions, training and development as well as complete financial accountability.

“I was an economics major and Jane Pietrowski and Judy Klein were my advisors. They paid very close attention to the courses I was taking and encouraged me to take lots of advanced math courses. Both Jane and Judy really opened my mind to the varied career possibilities in the field of economics.”

Noshua Watson ‘95
Noshua attended the Stanford University summer program in advanced economics for undergraduates and did well enough there to attend Stanford for graduate school in economics. She then worked as a journalist at Fortune magazine.  Noshua came back to Mary Baldwin to teach for a year and realized she really did want to be a professor! She is currently working on her doctorate in management strategy at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.

“My economics degree from Mary Baldwin helped prepare me for the rigors of law school as well as a fast-paced corporate law practice by giving me a foundational knowledge of the corporate world and the way markets function, and by honing my practical analytical skills.”
