Requirements for the Minor in Special Education
Students seeking a MINOR ONLY in Special Education shall take the following:
Required courses for PK-12:
- ED 111 Practicum in Education (3 sh)
- ED 215 Foundations and Legal Issues of Special Education (3 sh)
- ED 205 Characteristics of Exceptionality (3 sh)
- ED 322 Diagnostic and Developmental Reading (w/practicum) (4 sh)
- ED 350 Content Area Reading (3 sh)
- ED 315 Differential Strategies in Instruction and Assessment for Special Education (3 sh)
- ED 305 Classroom Management and Collaboration in Special Education Settings (4 sh)

In addition, the student who wishes to be licensed by the VA Department of Education with an endorsement in Special Education must complete:
Courses needed for licensure in SPED:
- ED 115: Foundations of Education (3 sh)
- ED 2XX: Transitioning in the Special Education Environment
- ED 393: Student Teaching in Special Education (15 sh)
- PSYCH 210: Child Psychology (3 sh)
- PSYCH 211: Adolescent Psychology (3 sh)
