French at Mary Baldwin College

Graduates

“My name is Crystal Scheulen and I graduated from MBC in 2000. I am working as a French teacher in Frederick County, Virginia at Sherando High School. I am the sole French teacher, therefore I teach all five levels offered at the school. I also sponsor the French Club. Majoring in French was an obvious aid in my career in teaching French. Upon graduating from MBC, I was going to work for the government, but one of the assistant principals called me, told me of the opening (because my former French teacher was leaving) and I accepted the position. My experience in taking French at MBC was nothing but positive both in my career and in life. I was fortunate enough to have two fantastic and patient advisors (Dr. Walker and Dr. McGovern) who made sure that the training/education I received was of the highest quality. They are two of the most intelligent and kind women I know and will never forget. I spent a May Term abroad with Dr. Walker and returned to the U.S. a changed woman; independent and confident. During that time I studied French theater and was able to visit some of the famous theaters in Paris and live with a Parisian family. I've not been the same since. My major in French at MBC is one of the best things that I've done for myself!”

“I am currently working in Paris with the French Ministry of Defense and with the international bank BNP Paribas as an English teacher. I also do freelance translations for a French classical music recording house.

For me, I enjoy the benefits of having been a French major on a daily basis. It is incredibly rewarding to live in a foreign country where you can truly participate in the everyday lives of, in my case, the French. Both Anne McGovern and Martha Walker were instrumental in improving my language skills while helping me to appreciate French culture, society, and literature on a much deeper level. Their support and interest in my studies made me want to constantly learn more.”

"Majoring in French was one of the best decisions I ever made. During my work at Mary Baldwin, I discovered a passion for the rhythm, the sounds, the music of foreign languages. French opened my ears to other sounds and my mind to other ways of thinking. Even now, as I pursue graduate studies in another field, I am grateful for the rare moments when I think of the French--not the English--word first, and for the pleasure of knowing a different way of seeing the world."

I am currently a graduate student at Duke Divinity School, pursuing a Master of Divinity (MDiv), which I plan to complete in Spring of 2009. My goal is to work overseas as a long-term missionary.
