Successful majors in French navigate well in the four skills of communication — speaking, listening, reading, and writing. They demonstrate their proficiency by studying in a Francophone country for May Term, a semester, or a year. Such experience opens up opportunities for cultural exchange, work, etc. in regions on four continents. In addition, the French major is a literary major. Students have a foundation not only in classic works of French literature but also in important works by modern Francophone authors of the Caribbean, Quebec, west Africa, and elsewhere. Successful majors complete a senior thesis written in French and treat a literary or cultural topic of interest to them.
