Marissa Goldbeck '08
math major, physics minor
After graduating from Mary Baldwin, Marissa continued her education at Dartmouth, earning a BS in engineering and is working toward a masters degree in engineering under Elsa Garmire, an optoelectronics expert whose work focuses on quantum devices. Marissa will eventually become a Quantum Engineer, a job that doesn't really yet exist.
Sarah Outterson '06
First MBC student to graduate with a physics minor
As a child, Sarah Outterson always wanted to be a theoretical physicist or, as a backup, an astronaut. In college, she loved all the logic puzzles and beautiful equations of Introductory Physics, and took as many more physics classes as Dr. P had time to offer. However, she realized how little time following either of her dream careers would leave her to learn everything else in the world, so she settled for a minor. Though she still has a bit of a thing for physics, she majored in Biology and English, two complex and fascinating subjects. After graduation, she continued her education for a few months with "courses" in traditional tall ship sailing, miscellaneous literature, Spanish, salsa dancing, and Mayan archaeology (the last three on a backpacking trip to Mexico). She started a PhD program in English at the City University of New York in the Fall of 2007.
Trimble Bailey Spitzer '99
VWIL/MBC graduate with a physics major
As her senior project, Trimble created the academic course Electrical Circuits- a self-paced lab course that is still available for students! She commissioned into the Air Force upon graduation from MBC and took a delay from active duty to go to medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk VA. She is currently a resident at George Washington University, Dept Obstetrics and Gynecology and was selected to become an administrative chief resident next year. She has also been awarded a funded 3-year Reproductive Endocrinology fellowship following residency.
Says Trimble, While many students look to Biology and Chemistry as "pre-med majors", I encourage you to take a look at physics. It was an excellent choice for me and fully prepared me for the rigors of graduate training. With a background in physics, you will be amazed the doors that open for you!
