Academics at MBC
Studio Art Graduates
“I couldn't draw a thing when I took my first studio class: I was basically terrified. Now I am a professional artist showing my work regionally and nationally. I would not have become an artist if I had not attended Mary Baldwin. The individual attention I received in studio classes was vital to my finding my own voice as an artist. I attended a competitive grad school where I had the opportunity to work with a who's-who list of contemporary artists, but my MBC studio professors are still the most important to me. "

“In addition to gaining technical, conceptual, and expressive skills in the studio program at Mary Baldwin, most importantly, I learned to think critically, to push myself creatively, and to understand the transition of philosophies between art movements in history. I am now very comfortable discussing art critically, reviewing art portfolios, writing articles and reviews about exhibits, teaching art to others, and I enjoy creating my own artwork. As the director of a community art center for two years (2003-2005), and now - renovating homes and building furniture, I couldn’t have asked for better preparation for my work.”

"My liberal arts education and studio experience at Mary Baldwin College had prepared me for a vocation as an art educator in both the public school and private school landscape. The importance of art in the core curriculum is a vital enhancement for the enrichment of a student's education. When I see a student's face light up with a thunderbolt of realization and sparks fly, that's when my heart fills with joy."
