"What I gained most from my time at Mary Baldwin
is a true sense of the community of theatre. It is vital that we as collaborative
theatre artists value each other and the product we create. That sense of
respect runs deeply through the Mary Baldwin theatre department."
Anne Meacham '03
I am currently Production Stage Manager/Company Manager for Lexington Children's
Theatre, Kentucky's only professional theatre for young audiences. I
stage manage or supervise student and intern stage managers on all productions
for our 11 show season. I also supervise our touring productions and
plan and coordinate regional performances.
"Being a student in the Mary Baldwin College
Theatre Department gave me the opportunity to try things I never thought
I'd be able to do. I came to MBC thinking I was "just" an actor.
With the encouragement and support of the professors, I was constantly stretched
out of my comfort zone. Whether it was playing the lead in a musical, directing
a one-act play, or even running a light board, I left MBC knowing that there
was nothing I wouldn't be able to handle, in the theatre or in life."
Bonnie Morrison '00
Currently an actor/singer based in Washington, D.C., Bonnie has acted in
regional theatre, off-off Broadway, and in student films for New York
University's Graduate Film Program and Drexel University.
"The small size of Mary Baldwin's theatre
department allowed me to experiment with every aspect of theatre, from acting
to building sets to playwriting. I believe that the emphases on individualized
education and team-based creativity gave me the education I need to enter
the professional theatre world successfully."
Christina Scott Sayer '04
Christina Scott Sayer graduated in 2004 with a double major in English and
theatre as well as a minor in music (vocal performance concentration).
She has continued at Mary Baldwin in the Master of Letters/Master of
Fine Arts program in Renaissance Literature in Performance (receiving
her Master of Letters in Teaching in 2006 and will be completing her
Master of Fine Arts in Dramaturgy in 2008). She is also pursuing a Master
of Arts in Children's Literature at Hollins University in Roanoke. She
currently works at the Blackfriars Playhouse in downtown Staunton, and
has served as stage manager/prompter for the Actors' Renaissance Season.
She has also taught one semester of Modern Theater and Drama.
The best part about being a theatre major at Baldwin
was being in such a small department so that I had close attention from my
advisor and professor. I also loved the ability to experience all aspects
of a play production. This has come in handy while directing plays with my
students as I'm required to wear many hats; director, designer, producer,
etc.
Ashley White '05
I am teaching high school English and theatre at a small private school in
Staunton.
"MBC theatre changed my life. It gave me a
confidence in all areas of my life, and friends I would do anything for at
a moment's notice. The small class sizes allowed me the opportunity to play
a variety of different roles and really hone my skills. The theatre profs
didn't just give me direction and knowledge -- they gave me my first jobs,
second moms, hot meals, and the opportunity to eventually expand into writing
and directing, which led to a great job. It would have taken me college and
a conservatory to build up the theatre resume I got at MBC. Being a Baldwin "theatre
girl" was the smartest decision I ever made!"
Amanda King '07
Right now I am working as a caregiver and commissioned article writer. I
am planning on getting my masters in the education field with the hopes
of opening my own children's theatre for special needs kids in the next
several years.
