The Wall within a Wall

Take a walk through McClung Residence Hall and you’ll notice an odd window placement near a stairwell. Look through and it’s not a view of the outside you’ll see, but simply a brick wall. The wall is part of The Brick House, a three-story dwelling built between 1869 and 1871 and once home to Mary Julia Baldwin. The structure was discovered in 1998 by architects renovating MBC’s administration building and adjoining residence hall. When McClung was built in 1910, architects literally built around The Brick House rather than tearing it down, some say out of respect for the college’s namesake. A brass plaque outside room 14 identifies the room Ms. Baldwin once occupied.
