Our Mission:

The Writing Center serves students, faculty, and staff at Mary Baldwin College. In individual tutorial sessions, Writing Center consultants support students through all stages of the writing process, including narrowing a topic, generating ideas, organizing an essay, crafting a thesis, writing an initial essay, revising a draft, and editing a final draft. Peer tutors help students write for numerous disciplines within a variety of formats (lab reports, research papers, critical essays, book reports, newspaper articles, critiques) and encourage students to become creative, thoughtful writers, attentive readers, and careful editors.

Workshops:

Professor Molly Petty is available to conduct a small group workshops in the Writing Center or in classes. Staff conduct short information sessions about the Writing Center in classes at MBC. Faculty who would like Professor Petty or a staff member to visit their classes or conduct a writing workshop should e-mail mpetty@mbc.edu.

Our Policies:

Writing Center tutors encourage independent thinking and writing. To that end, tutors do not "correct" or "edit" student work; instead, they identify problems, suggest corrections, and encourage students to apply these suggestions to their work.

Tutors send progress reports to professors unless a student prefers that tutorial sessions remain confidential.

Students who receive help from the Writing Center, either in person or through e-mail, should acknowledge that assistance on the written work they submit to their professors.

Our Staff:

The Writing Center is staffed by Mary Baldwin students who have completed training under the direction of Molly Petty, assistant professor of English/director of the Writing Center.
