By participating in various projects that help meet the needs of the local community, Students in Phil 140 — Community and Service Learning — develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. The experience helps those students explore and understand their own commitment to community-oriented values, try out skills which support or enhance effective citizenship, and learn how to reach out to others in a humane, sensitive, and effective manner.
Among several service projects in which she participated, Amelia Kakar '14 volunteered with the Boys and Girls Club and helped sell necklaces through Bead for Life to help improve the quality of lives in poverty-stricken or post-conflict societies.
"This class and the events I participated in helped strengthen my perspectives on volunteering and serving my community," Kakar said. "It has strengthened my values and made me strong enough to help others."
