Installation by Baltimore Artist Ruth Pettus at MBC’s Hunt Gallery

From November 12 to December 7, 2012, the exhibition “MOMENTUM: An Installation by Ruth Pettus” will be on view at Mary Baldwin’s Hunt Gallery. Pettus was born in 1957 in Lower Hutt, New Zealand and spent her childhood in London and Australia. Pettus attended the University of Sydney for one year before moving to the United States. After part-time study at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC. she moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where she lives today.

The work in “MOMENTUM” is comprised of discarded footwear and the detritus of everyday life that is found on and off the street, and in the obscure corners of everyday urban and rural environments. Pettus began working with old shoes in 1995.

“In every movement, however small, there is momentum. Horace’s phrase, ‘in momento horae,’ meaning ‘in the movement of time,’ is an inviting area of thought when contemplating the theme of time and motion,” she said. “Our own worn shoes bear evidence of this. Each shoe in this exhibition has evidence of its personal momentum: the travails and weight that may have slowed its progress … conversely [each shoe] speaks of the journey of least resistance.”

A reception will be held for the artist on November 12 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Hunt Gallery in Hunt Dining Hall. The public is invited to attend. Hunt Gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary work in all media by regionally and nationally recognized artists. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the college’s academic year. Hunt Gallery’s schedule for the 2012-2013 academic year can be found online.
