Murphy Deming Welcomes OT Director of Clinical Education

MDCHS_ellingtonOT_headshotAs the three-story building takes shape on the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences campus in Fishersville, the program’s faculty and staff continues to grow. The most recent addition is Allison Ellington, who was named instructor and director of clinical education for the occupational therapy (OT) program.

Ellington brings several years of clinical experience — primarily in adult neurological rehabilitation — to the Murphy Deming team. She earned a master of science in occupational therapy from Ithaca College, and she holds advanced clinical certification in Neuro-Integrative Functional Rehabilitation and Habilitation and certification through the American Occupational Therapy Organization as a fieldwork educator. While working at the University of Virginia HealthSouth, Ellington served as fieldwork educator and assisted the occupational therapy fieldwork coordinator in scheduling and policy development. She is engaged in research on the use of virtual reality in stroke rehabilitation. She is also certified in Functional Independence Measure and has been trained with rehabilitation technology systems such as Bioness H-200 and ReoGo.

“I have always enjoyed educating occupational therapy students when they completed fieldwork rotations in a hospital setting,” Ellington said. “Now, I’m very excited to step across into the academic program side of things to help prepare therapy students to be successful clinicians.”

Ellington joins OT Program Director Ben Herz. One more faculty member will be hired in the OT program before doors open to students in June 2014.
